Project Overview

SOMBS Holdings was contracted by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) to deliver a full‑scale refurbishment and upgrade of the Chris Hani Station. The project transformed an aging transport hub into a modern, safe, and accessible facility for thousands of daily commuters.

Executed over 12 months, the work included structural repairs, platform upgrades, electrical and plumbing modernisation, and enhanced safety features — all while maintaining partial station operations to minimise disruption.

"The Chris Hani Station refurbishment stands as a testament to our ability to deliver complex public infrastructure projects on time, within budget, and with zero safety incidents."

Scope of Work

  • Complete structural assessment and reinforcement of existing concrete elements.
  • Refurbishment of all passenger platforms, including resurfacing, tactile paving, and roof repairs.
  • Installation of new energy‑efficient LED lighting throughout the station.
  • Upgrade of the main electrical distribution board and backup power systems.
  • Plumbing overhauls: new ablution facilities, drainage improvements, and water‑saving fixtures.
  • Fire detection and suppression systems installed to SANS 10400 standards.
  • Improved accessibility with ramps, handrails, and designated boarding areas.
  • Security enhancements including CCTV, perimeter fencing, and upgraded ticketing office.

Implementation & Quality

All work was performed in accordance with PRASA’s stringent engineering standards, the JBCC contract, and national building regulations. Our site team coordinated closely with station management to ensure safe pedestrian flow and uninterrupted train services during construction. Weekly quality audits and progress reports kept the project on track.

The station was handed over with a 12‑month defects liability period, and the completed facility now serves as a benchmark for future station upgrades in the region.
